We are constantly working on reducing our emissions and our impact on the external environment.
As Denmark’s largest refinery, we are aware of the impact of our operations on the environment. Therefore, we have been working on sustainable solutions for reducing emissions for many years. One of our main focus areas is production using fewer resources, which will enable us to cut our CO₂ emissions and thus reduce the impact the refinery has on our climate.

Continuous energy optimisation
and reduced emissions
Since its establishment in 1961, the refinery in Kalundborg has had a strong focus on energy optimisation, and we constantly strive to reduce our energy consumption, and thus reduce our climate impact. We therefore strive for energy optimisation in our operations, maintenance, and in the development of products and projects for energy reduction.
Here you will find a selection of our ongoing energy optimisation projects.

We power sustainable changes
Each year, we set goals for improvements in terms of the environment, energy and quality, in accordance with our certified management system. These goals are in addition to the refinery’s regulatory requirements, which are set out in the environmental permit.

Top 10
Kalundborg Refinery is amongst the top 10 refineries with the lowest CO₂ emissions in terms of complexity and production.

As a refinery, we often think about how we can optimise our energy consumption in the plant, in terms of utilisation and plant efficiency, whilst at the same time reducing energy costs.
This can be achieved in many ways, including optimising heat integration.

Waste sorting ensures
CO₂ reductions
Waste is now considered a resource and when waste is sorted for recycling, it becomes secondary raw materials. These secondary raw materials can replace essential raw materials in the production of new goods, benefiting the climate and the environment.
We have a strong focus on waste sorting to ensure that as much waste as possible is sent for recycling.
Systematic cleaning
ensures high quality
The refinery has its own wastewater treatment plant, which uses a combination of mechanical and biological treatment. The plant is specifically designed to treat the different types of wastewaters, consisting of process wastewater, sanitary wastewater and surface water.
The comprehensive treatment process ensures the high quality of the purified water, which is discharged into Kalundborg Fjord.

A part of Kalundborg Symbiosis
We are part of the world’s leading industrial symbiosis – the Kalundborg Symbiosis. This symbiosis creates profit and sustainable development through a circular approach to production. The main principle is that a residual flow in one company can become a resource in another.
Kalundborg Symbiosis is a partnership between public and private companies in Kalundborg, that provide, share and reuse resources for increased, shared value creation through local partnerships.

Sustainable management
and governance
We comply with several standards for management, pressurised equipment and safety regulations for electrical work/authorisation and biofuel production. The systems are all certified and verified by third parties.

Did you know that every year, Kalundborg Symbiosis saves partners and the environment 4 million m3 of groundwater by using surface water, 586,000 tonnes of CO₂ and 62,000 tonnes of recycled waste materials?
