Safe, reliable and responsible production

It is our goal to operate the refinery without harm to people, environment and equipment. Therefore, safety, responsibility and reliability are at the centre of our actions. At all times.

Running a such a complex plant as a refinery is only possible because we have more than 400 skilled and dedicated employees to keep the wheels turning. They are our most valued asset and the key to achieving our goals – now and in the future.

The base refinery was put into commission more than 60 years ago, and the plant has since then been gradually expanded to meet the needs of energy solutions that the market demands.

0 million tonnes
Every year up to 5.5 million tonnes of crude oil, condensate and blending products are processed.
0 square kilometres
The refinery stretches an area of roughly 1.2 square kilometres.

Our production plant

Crude oil and condensate are transported by ship to Kalundborg and placed in tank farms. From here, the materials are pumped from the large storage tanks through a heating system consisting of heat exchangers and furnaces to an atmospheric distillation column.

Here, the initial fractioning into gas, naphtha and kerosene takes place. A series of refining processes are subsequently carried out in various processing plants, where the products demanded by the market are produced.

Safety for people, environment and citizens

Safety is and remains our top priority, and we have high ambitions for our safety performance. An excellent understanding of risk, a strong compliance culture, and good safety conduct ensure we have a proactive safety culture and can operate without harming people, the environment, or equipment.

Here, safety is not just a concept or a set of rules. Safety is deeply rooted in our culture and our self-understanding. We work safely or we stop working. Each year, we invest in activities aimed at onboarding new employees and retaining experienced employees in our proactive safety culture.

This is also reflected in our safety slogan.

Routine shutdowns
of the plant

Planned shutdowns, so called turnarounds, are recurring events and take place every four years. Here, all or part of the refinery is taken out of operation for inspection, maintenance and cleaning. This ensures that we can continue to operate the plant safely, efficiently and reliably.

Following the acquisition by Klesch Group, a new strategy for the planned shutdowns was initiated to improve safety and mitigate operational downtime.
