Society is in constant motion, and motion requires energy. At the refinery in Kalundborg, for more than 60 years we have delivered the necessary energy that keeps society moving.
Today, more than 15 percent of all energy consumed in Denmark comes from the refinery in Kalundborg. Not many people realise it, but we are the driving force that makes modern society possible and constantly present in people’s everyday lives.
The refinery in Kalundborg is Denmark’s largest and processes up to 5.5 million tonnes of crude oil, condensate, and blended products every year. We produce the fuels of today, including petrol, diesel, heating oil, bunker fuel, propane and naphtha.

Environmental Classified Diesel
We are one of only five refineries in the Nordic region to produce low-aromatic diesel for the Swedish market. The plant for dearomatisation of gas oil was put into service in 2002, and the following year the first batch of the Swedish environmental classified diesel, MK1, was shipped from Kalundborg. MK1 has cleaner combustion and thus reduced emissions of particles.
Bioethanol and biodiesel
We are the largest buyer of bioethanol and biodiesel in Denmark with an annual consumption of more than 130,000 m³. Bioethanol (10 percent) is blended into all petrol, and biodiesel (7 percent) into all diesel. Today, bioethanol and biofuel make up almost 90 percent of the total share of renewable energy in transport. Blending of biofuels reduces CO₂ emissions.

At Klesch, we seek to acquire refinery assets from both public and private corporations. We have a proven track record of optimising our refineries to enable them to achieve high performance. Under Klesch’s ownership, our refineries have consistently grown revenues, added new product lines and increased operational efficiencies.

Like the rest of society, we are looking into a future where fossil fuels are replaced by RE-based alternatives. As demand changes, we will adapt production to the raw materials we use and the products we produce. The development is already happening now, and it will accelerate in the coming decades.

Did you know that our production of petrol alone can cover 100 percent of the annual Danish demand? For diesel our production can cover 60 percent of the demand.
